For him it was simple…health and wellness was and remains a priority and is incorporated into his day, everyday. Whether it be nutrition, fitness or time off, Ken believes you must make each a daily priority. Ken played hockey and was a member of Team Canada cycling in 1982-84. Ken enjoys downhill skiing, motocross, hiking and of course a good CrossFit WOD. Ken is passionate about helping all of his athletes reach their goals and is always willing to take time to talk all things health and wellness.

How did you get into coaching?

I wanted to help others realize their potential. Having CrossFitted for a while prior to coaching, I desired to expand my perception on how movements can be performed. One way this could be achieved is by utilizing, and learning, multiple coaching techniques while expanding my education in strength and conditioning.

What is the best part of Reebok CrossFit Ramsay?

Hands down the community. Pretty stereotypical, but lets call a spade a spade.

Most rewarding part of coaching?

Its cool to see people having that ah ha moment. This is where all the work, cues and feedback a person receives all come together. They have made the mind and body connection for a given movement. That to me is really cool.

How would you describe your coaching style?

Kind of paradoxical. Something like the organic-ness of a hippy combined with the hard ass of a logger.

Favourite kind of workout?

I find something in each session to enjoy or walk away having learned. But there might a bias towards weightlifting.

Favourite post WOD meal?

Milk

Movement or WOD that makes you go fetal?

One time a while back I did Fran and it took 40 min for me to feel right again. Lately a combo of a lift with burpees and air dyne has my ticket.

His favourite part about CrossFit are the relationships and commeraderie you create and of course competing hard in all the WODS.

Abdullah’s favourite movement is the clean, and he well known for his quick burpees and loud “woooooos” during intense workouts.

How did you get into coaching?

A friend of mine in Fernie invited me to try out these CrossFit classes and to check out this new gym in town. From that moment on I was hooked! A few years later I took my Level 1 course because I wanted to learn more about the inner workings of the sport and to improve my athleticism. There was an opportunity to shadow the coaches at CrossFit Fernie so I signed up right away. I shadowed 100 hours before I could take on classes which was a huge benefit for me. It taught me proper cues, point of performance, positive language, motivating athletes and just how to have fun in class. I enjoy coaching because I absolutely love the community. It’s my 2nd home and I love being immersed in this sport.

What is the best part of Reebok CrossFit Ramsay?

The community! The people are supportive, inspiring, motivating and always pushing me to my full potential.

Most rewarding part of coaching?

The most rewarding part of coaching is watching the athletes do something for the first time or hit a PR. I enjoy helping people achieve results as well teaching them new ways to overcome obstacles. I get so much joy helping others reach success as well making that hour the best part of their day.

How would you describe your coaching style?

I find my coaching style is a combination of everything for everyone. I like to learn about the athlete so I know how to coach them. I find every athlete likes to be coached differently and it’s the coaches job to understand how and when to coach that athlete in a positive way. I might not be the perfect coach but I’m knowledgeable, positive and motivating. Not only do I challenge my athletes to become the best they can but I challenge myself to become the best coach!

Favorite kind of workout?

I won Canadian Powerlifting Championships in 2001 so I love moving heavy weights around. Anything that involves heavy barbell work and strict movements.

Favorite post WOD meal?

DONUTS!!! Okay, no. Oatmeal, banana and a protein bar.

Movement or WOD that makes you go fetal?

C2B and Muscle Ups. I have a powerlifting background…..I’m not built for gymnastics.

How did you get into coaching?

I was a personal trainer at another gym, looking for a change so I signed up for the New You Challenge. I’ve loved the gym environment for years and found a ton of fulfillment in helping others reach their goals. About halfway through the Challenge the gym owner asked if I would be interested in joining the team here at RCR and I began interning as soon as my 6 weeks were up. I have loved every minute since.

What is the best part of Reebok CrossFit Ramsay?

The potential of this place. As soon as you walk through the corridor into the open space it is so evident that great things happen here.

Most rewarding part of coaching?

Getting to encourage people to discover, or rediscover the potential of their bodies.

It’s a privilege to watch the a person develop physically and mentally through fitness. The “I can’t”s that are so prevalent at the beginning are drowned out by new goals, new opportunity, and new enthusiasm.

How would you describe your coaching style?

Patient & caring, but a little bit of a hard ass.

Favourite kind of workout?

Heavy Barbell work and Long Chippers

Favourite post WOD meal?

Chia seed pudding with raisins & a protein shake

Movement or WOD that makes you go fetal?

High volume thrusters

How did you get into coaching?

I started CrossFit in 2012 and fell in love with it. It reminded me of how I used to train as an athlete and more and so it was a natural progression. I’ve been coaching figure skating for 10+ years. I love pulling out the best in athletes, and life the challenge of working with a variety of ages and abilities. I love CrossFit Kids and have been having so much fun implementing a CrossFit Kids program at my skating club!

What is the best part of Reebok CrossFit Ramsay?

Everyone is really supportive and it’s a super fun environment.

Most rewarding part of coaching?

I kind of mentioned it in question 1, but I love pulling out people’s best qualities. I love working with the challenge group because they are making super positive lifestyle changes and I love seeing them progress and start to love fitness! When working with kids, I love it when kids actually ask to do burpees (happens all the time!!) because it means I’ve been successful in making fitness fun!

How would you describe your coaching style?

I am supportive and a listener. I like to give equal opportunity and attention to all athletes, and I love to celebrate the little successes and improvements every day. I have a huge attention to detail that comes from my figure skating background, so I expect I’ll be a relentless perfectionist at all times.

Favorite kind of workout?

I love a quick and dirty metcon, the kind that leaves you in a puddle on the floor. I also like lifting, especially snatching.

Favorite post-WOD meal?

Burgers all the way, 100% of the time.

Movement or WOD that makes you go fetal?

Fran of course, thrusters…
